Summary

Radiographic imaging rarely reveals calcification in newly diagnosed mediastinal lymphoma before treatment. This finding is uncommon in lymphomatous tissue, as shown in two patients and other isolated reports.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Mediastinal lymphoma is a significant oncologic diagnosis.
  • Radiographic assessment is crucial for initial staging and treatment planning.

Observation:

  • Two patients with newly diagnosed mediastinal lymphoma exhibited calcification within the tumor.
  • This observation aligns with rare, isolated reports in medical literature.

Findings:

  • Radiographic examinations can, in infrequent cases, detect calcification in lymphomatous tissue.
  • The presence of calcification does not preclude a lymphoma diagnosis.

Implications:

  • Recognizing pre-treatment calcification in mediastinal lymphoma aids in accurate diagnosis.
  • Further research may explore the significance and origin of calcification in lymphoma.
