Background:

Psychiatric inpatients face elevated suicide risks.
Accurate identification of imminent suicide risk among inpatients remains a significant challenge for healthcare professionals.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate clinical risk factors associated with inpatient suicide during the hospital stay.
To identify predictors of suicide among psychiatric inpatients.

Main Methods:

Retrospective case-control study design.
Inpatient suicide cases were identified by linking suicide registers with psychiatric hospital records.
Logistic regression analysis was used to determine significant predictors.

Main Results:

Factors significantly differentiating suicide cases included a history of suicide attempts, ongoing suicidal ideation, lack of future planning, no mood improvement, and leaving the ward without notice.
Logistic regression highlighted history of attempted suicide, no prospective plan development, no mood improvement, and leaving ward without notice as significant predictors of inpatient suicide.

Conclusions:

Thorough assessment of suicidal ideation and behaviors is vital for prevention.
Emphasizing future planning and mood improvement can mitigate risk.
Reviewing hospital policies for patients leaving without notice is recommended.
