Area of Science:

  • Nursing Science
  • Healthcare Professional Development

Background:

  • Defining 'clinical credibility' is crucial for advancing nursing science and practice.
  • Existing definitions may not fully encompass the multifaceted nature of credibility from diverse stakeholder perspectives.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a working definition of 'clinical credibility' within nursing science.
  • To explore and map the core components of clinical credibility as perceived by nursing students, healthcare professionals, and patients.

Main Methods:

  • Concept mapping methodology was employed, involving statement generation, prioritization, and clustering.
  • Data were collected from 67 participants across three stakeholder groups: nursing students, nurses/healthcare professionals, and patients.
  • The Ariadne software was used to analyze 429 generated statements and create a visual concept map.

Main Results:

  • The concept map identified nine key clusters of clinical credibility, ordered by importance.
  • Top clusters included: Safe practice, Communication, Patient-centered care, Accountability, Professional practice, and Clinical competence.
  • Other significant clusters were Teaching attributes, Contemporary expert, and Leadership.

Conclusions:

  • Clinical credibility is a multidimensional construct, extending beyond just contemporary clinical practice.
  • Current clinical practice is an important element but not the sole determinant of a nurse's credibility.
