Summary

Phrynoderma patients in Sri Lanka showed significantly lower plasma alpha-tocopherol and higher indicators of riboflavin deficiency compared to controls. Malnutrition may contribute to these vitamin deficiencies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential nutritional deficiencies in patients with phrynoderma.
  • To compare vitamin and mineral levels between phrynoderma patients and healthy controls.

  • Plasma levels of alpha-tocopherol, retinol, retinol-binding protein, vitamin B-12, folic acid, thiamin, selenium, and zinc were measured.
  • Erythrocyte glutathione reductase activity was assessed to evaluate riboflavin status.

  • Phrynoderma patients (n=11) had significantly lower plasma alpha-tocopherol (3.3 ± 0.6 μmol/L) compared to controls (13.0 ± 2.3 μmol/L, p < 0.002).
  • Patients exhibited significantly greater riboflavin deficiency, indicated by erythrocyte glutathione reductase activity (p < 0.005).
  • No significant differences were found in other measured nutrients.

Conclusions:

  • Low alpha-tocopherol and riboflavin deficiency are associated with phrynoderma.
  • Primary malnutrition may be a contributing factor to these deficiencies in phrynoderma cases.
