Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Hepatology
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Listeria monocytogenes is an opportunistic pathogen.
  • Cirrhosis increases susceptibility to infections.
  • Peritonitis is a serious complication in patients with liver disease.

Observation:

  • A case of Listeria monocytogenes peritonitis in a patient with cirrhosis and soft tissue infection is presented.
  • A review of six previously documented cases was conducted.
  • All seven reported patients had bacteremia.

Findings:

  • Hematogenous seeding from a distant infection site is the probable pathogenic mechanism for Listeria monocytogenes peritonitis.
  • Clinical and laboratory features of Listeria monocytogenes peritonitis were compared to other bacterial causes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Listeria monocytogenes peritonitis presents unique characteristics compared to common bacterial peritonitis.
  • Implications:

    • This study enhances understanding of Listeria monocytogenes peritonitis pathogenesis in immunocompromised individuals.
    • Early recognition and appropriate management are crucial for improving outcomes.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate specific risk factors and optimal treatment strategies.
