Area of Science:

  • Medicine
  • Pulmonology
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Behçet's disease is a rare systemic vasculitis.
  • It primarily affects the eyes, oral mucosa, and genital areas.
  • Rare complications can involve multiple organ systems.

Observation:

  • A patient with a 20-year history of Behçet's disease presented with dyspnea.
  • The dyspnea was caused by a massive chylothorax, a rare complication.
  • Initial treatments including corticosteroids, heparin, and urokinase were ineffective.

Findings:

  • Pleuropexy with Broncasma Berna was administered.
  • This treatment effectively controlled the thoracic fluid accumulation.
  • This case highlights an extremely rare manifestation of Behçet's disease.

Implications:

  • This case adds to the limited literature on chylothorax as a complication of Behçet's disease.
  • It suggests pleuropexy may be an effective treatment option for managing chylothorax in Behçet's patients.
  • Further research is needed to understand the pathophysiology and optimal management of this rare complication.
