Nondisjunction01:29

Nondisjunction

80.5K
During meiosis, chromosomes occasionally separate improperly. This occurs due to failure of homologous chromosome separation during meiosis I or failed sister chromatid separation during meiosis II. In some species, notably plants, nondisjunction can result in an organism with an entire additional set of chromosomes, which is called polyploidy. In humans, nondisjunction can occur during male or female gametogenesis and the resulting gametes possess one too many or one too few chromosomes.

Nondisjunction01:21

Nondisjunction

4.5K
Nondisjunction is the failure of homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids to separate correctly and move to the opposite poles of the cells. This produces daughter cells with abnormal chromosome numbers.  Nondisjunction is common during anaphase I or anaphase II of meiosis.  Mutations in synaptonemal complex proteins that attach homologous chromosomes increase the chances of nondisjunction in anaphase I of meiosis I. In contrast, mutations in topoisomerases and condensins that hold...

Incomplete Dominance01:43

Incomplete Dominance

28.9K
Gregor Mendel's work (1822 - 1884) was primarily focused on pea plants. Through his initial experiments, he determined that every gene in a diploid cell has two variants called alleles inherited from each parent. He suggested that amongst these two alleles, one allele is dominant in character and the other recessive. The combination of alleles determines the phenotype of a gene in an organism.

Relationship Formation02:12

Relationship Formation

44.2K
What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Equivalent Couples01:28

Equivalent Couples

504
In mechanical engineering, the concept of equivalent couples plays a crucial role in understanding and analyzing various mechanical systems.
Two couples are considered to be equivalent if they produce the same rotational effect on a rigid body. In other words, the two couples have the same magnitude and act in the same direction, causing the same angular displacement or acceleration in the body.
For instance, consider two couples lying in the plane of the page, with one having a pair of equal...

Simplification of a Force and Couple System I01:18

Simplification of a Force and Couple System I

816
The concept of reducing a system of forces and couple moments to an equivalent system is essential in simplifying the analysis of rigid bodies. This reduction allows for more straightforward computation and understanding of the external effects produced by the system. In particular, systems with an equivalent resultant force and a resultant couple moment having perpendicular lines of action can be further reduced to a single equivalent resultant force acting along a new line of action. There...

    Area of Science:

    • Political Science
    • Sociology
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • The survival of popular government relies on virtuous citizens and shared values.
    • Recent events, particularly the pandemic, have exacerbated societal fractures.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To examine the impact of the pandemic on civic virtue and national unity.
    • To assess the implications of societal disagreement on the health of the republic.

    Main Methods:

    • Qualitative analysis of public discourse during the pandemic.
    • Review of historical concepts of civic virtue and republicanism.

    Main Results:

    • The pandemic exposed a significant divergence in public understanding of and agreement on what constitutes civic virtue.
    • This lack of consensus indicates profound cracks within the social and political union.

    Conclusions:

    • A shared understanding of virtue is critical for the sustainability of popular governance.
    • The current societal divisions pose a significant risk to the health and stability of the republic.
