Background:

Trichiasis, or misdirected eyelashes, can cause significant ocular discomfort and damage.
Understanding the underlying causes of trichiasis is crucial for effective treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

To present clinical findings in patients with a provisional diagnosis of trichiasis.
To propose and define a specific type of entropion contributing to trichiasis.
To clarify existing terminology related to trichiasis and entropion.

Main Methods:

Clinical examination of 116 patients diagnosed with trichiasis.
Identification of lash-globe contact and associated eyelid abnormalities.
Electron microscopy of eyelid biopsy specimens to confirm clinical observations.

A small degree of entropion causing lash-globe contact was detected in 69% of patients.
The proposed condition, 'lid border entropion,' is characterized by conjunctivalization of meibomian gland orifices and anterior displacement of the mucocutaneous junction.
