Relationship Formation02:12

Relationship Formation

44.1K
What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Socioemotional Experience and Gender Development01:30

Socioemotional Experience and Gender Development

156
Social-emotional experiences and cultural influences play significant roles in shaping gender development. During middle childhood, from ages 6 to 11, peer groups become dominant in reinforcing gender norms. Children in this age group often align with same-gender peer groups, which actively encourage behaviors that conform to traditional gender roles. For instance, boys may be discouraged from engaging in activities perceived as feminine, reinforcing culturally dictated norms about masculinity...

Surveys02:16

Surveys

16.3K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Qualitative Analysis01:10

Qualitative Analysis

1.0K
Qualitative analysis is the process of identifying elements, ions, or compounds in an unknown sample. It is the first and most fundamental type of analysis based on the hierarchy of analytical goals. This hierarchy is significant as it provides a structured approach to scientific research, with qualitative analysis serving as the initial step, providing essential information before moving on to quantitative or other forms of analysis.
There are two main approaches to qualitative analysis:...

Qualitative Analysis

23.2K
For solutions containing mixtures of different cations, the identity of each cation can be determined by qualitative analysis. This technique involves a series of selective precipitations with different chemical reagents, each reaction producing a characteristic precipitate for a specific group of cations. Metal ions within a group are further separated by varying the pH, heating the mixture to redissolve a precipitate, or adding other reagents to form complex ions.
For instance, group IV...

Impact of Groups on Individuals01:28

Impact of Groups on Individuals

182
Groups play a fundamental role in shaping individual behavior, as they establish norms that guide interactions and decision-making. Social psychology examines how individuals conform to group expectations, often adjusting their attitudes and actions to align with group norms. These norms can be formal, such as workplace policies, or informal, such as unspoken social expectations within a fraternity.Conformity and Social InfluenceConformity arises when individuals modify their behaviors or...

Summary

Virtual synchronous focus groups are feasible for HIV prevention research with Black sexual minority men (BSMM). Optimal participation requires clear consent, culturally relevant facilitation, and suitable incentives for BSMM.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Qualitative Research Methods
  • HIV Prevention

Background:

  • Focus groups are valuable for HIV prevention research in US subpopulations like Black gay, Black bisexual, and other Black sexual minority men (BSMM).
  • Virtual synchronous focus groups offer a convenient electronic method for qualitative data collection.
  • Protocols and acceptability data for virtual focus groups among BSMM in HIV prevention research are currently limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the protocols and assess the acceptability of virtual synchronous focus groups.
  • To evaluate the feasibility of using this method for HIV prevention research among BSMM.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted 8 virtual synchronous focus groups via Zoom with HIV-negative BSMM (N=39) across different age strata.
  • Participants completed an electronic satisfaction survey via Qualtrics post-focus group.
  • Data collected from BSMM aged 18-44 years in US cities.

Main Results:

  • All participants expressed satisfaction with the virtual focus group experience.
  • The majority (100%) felt their information was safe to share within the group.
  • Most participants (97%) were satisfied with the provided incentive, with only 17% preferring written over oral consent.

Conclusions:

  • Virtual synchronous focus groups are a feasible method for HIV prevention research involving BSMM.
  • Effective implementation necessitates comprehensive oral informed consent, culturally sensitive facilitation, and appropriate incentives.
  • Addressing these factors is crucial for maximizing participant engagement and data quality.
