Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Genomics
  • Precision Medicine

Background:

  • Solid tumors require continuous monitoring for evolving genomic alterations.
  • Next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms have advanced tumor molecular profiling.
  • Understanding tumor evolution is crucial for effective cancer treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess if repeat tumor molecular profiling identifies new findings impacting clinical care.
  • To evaluate the clinical utility of sequential tumor testing in solid malignancies.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 110 patients with solid tumors and multiple molecular analyses.
  • Analysis of genomic alterations and subsequent therapies based on test results.
  • Chart review to determine the impact of tumor profiling on clinical practice.

Main Results:

  • Eighty-seven of 98 patients showed differences in sequential tumor molecular profiling results.
  • The median time between tests was 10 months, often at disease progression.
  • Six patients (6%) had treatment changes based on new genomic findings from sequential testing.

Conclusions:

  • Sequential tumor molecular profiling can identify actionable genomic alterations.
  • This approach may offer future clinical benefits, especially for patients with limited treatment options.
  • Precision medicine strategies incorporating repeat testing are vital for advancing cancer care.
