Providing lung cancer screening (LCS) educational information during smoking cessation counseling increased low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) utilization among eligible smokers who watched the video. This intervention did not impact smoking cessation rates.
Area of Science:
- Pulmonology
- Oncology
- Public Health
Background:
- Lung cancer screening (LCS) using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) significantly reduces lung cancer mortality in high-risk individuals.
- However, awareness and utilization of LCS remain low among eligible smokers.
- Smoking cessation counseling presents a potential opportunity to educate patients about LCS.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of LCS educational information on LDCT utilization and smoking cessation rates.
- To assess the effectiveness of a web-based educational video intervention during smoking cessation services.
Main Methods:
- A randomized controlled trial involving 1281 smokers aged 55-80 undergoing smoking cessation services.
- Participants were assigned to either view an LCS educational video (intervention group) or receive usual care (control group).
- Outcomes included chest CT scan utilization, survey responses, and patient-reported smoking abstinence at 6 months.
Main Results:
- Only 14% of participants watched the educational video.
- Among those who completed the video, LDCT utilization was significantly higher (8.9%) compared to the control group (4.3%).
- No significant difference in smoking abstinence was observed between the intervention and control groups.
Conclusions:
- An educational intervention about LCS may enhance LDCT uptake in eligible current smokers during smoking cessation counseling.
- Further research is warranted to optimize LCS education within smoking cessation programs.
- Integrating LCS awareness into cessation services holds promise for improving screening adherence.
