Summary

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) may cause temporary proteinuria but does not harm kidney function long-term. Kidney function improves after ESWL if stones caused obstruction.

Background:

  • Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a primary treatment for upper tract renal stones.
  • The long-term effects of ESWL on renal function remain unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the short-term and long-term effects of ESWL on renal function.
  • To assess changes in creatinine clearance, sodium excretion, protein excretion, and urine osmolality post-ESWL.

  • Physiological parameters were measured before and after ESWL in 26 patients.
  • A follow-up study assessed patients with significant proteinuria for 3-6 months.

  • Transient nephrotic-range proteinuria occurred immediately after ESWL, resolving within 3-6 months.
