Introduction to Seed Plants03:40

Introduction to Seed Plants

67.0K
Most plants are seed plants—characterized by seeds, pollen, and reduced gametophytes. Seed plants include gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Epiphytes, Parasites, and Carnivores02:40

Epiphytes, Parasites, and Carnivores

16.0K
Plants often form mutualistic relationships with soil-dwelling fungi or bacteria to enhance their roots’ nutrient uptake ability. Root-colonizing fungi (e.g., mycorrhizae) increase a plant’s root surface area, which promotes nutrient absorption. While root-colonizing, nitrogen-fixing bacteria (e.g., rhizobia) convert atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia (NH3), making nitrogen available to plants for various biological functions. For example, nitrogen is essential for the...

Types of Selection01:46

Types of Selection

43.2K
Natural selection influences the frequencies of particular alleles and phenotypes within populations in several different ways. Primarily, natural selection can be directional, stabilizing, or disruptive. Directional selection favors one extreme trait and shifts the population towards that phenotype while selecting against individuals displaying alternate traits. Stabilizing selection favors an intermediate trait with a narrow range of variation. Deviation from the optimal phenotype towards an...

Seed Structure and Early Development of the Sporophyte02:33

Seed Structure and Early Development of the Sporophyte

30.2K
Seed structures are composed of a protective seed coat surrounding a plant embryo, and a food store for the developing embryo. The embryo contains the precursor tissues for leaves, stem, and roots. The endosperm and cotyledons—seed leaves—act as the food reserves for the growing embryo.

Frequency-dependent Selection01:21

Frequency-dependent Selection

22.7K
When the fitness of a trait is influenced by how common it is (i.e., its frequency) relative to different traits within a population, this is referred to as frequency-dependent selection. Frequency-dependent selection may occur between species or within a single species. This type of selection can either be positive—with more common phenotypes having higher fitness—or negative, with rarer phenotypes conferring increased fitness.

Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

9.0K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Area of Science:

  • Botany
  • Plant Taxonomy

Background:

  • The Sapotaceae family exhibits complex taxonomy due to significant morphological variation.
  • This heterogeneity has led to numerous described genera and binomials, creating taxonomic challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To resolve unresolved nomenclature issues within the Sapotaceae family.
  • To propose new lectotype designations for Sapotaceae binomials.

Main Methods:

  • Following the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants.
  • Proposing new lectotype designations for existing binomials.

Main Results:

  • 74 new lectotype designations are proposed.
  • Four of these designations are second-step typifications.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed lectotypifications will aid in stabilizing the taxonomy of Sapotaceae.
  • This work contributes to resolving historical nomenclature uncertainties in the family.
