Summary

Pelvic lymphocysts, fluid collections after cervical cancer surgery, were found in 25.3% of patients. Poorly differentiated tumors were linked to their development, but all resolved without major complications.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Pelvic lymphocysts are uncommon complications following radical cervical cancer surgery.
  • Recognition of pelvic lymphocysts can be challenging in clinical practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence and clinical characteristics of pelvic lymphocysts after radical cervical cancer surgery.
  • To identify potential risk factors associated with lymphocyst formation.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of patient data over a 10-year period.
  • Diagnosis of lymphocysts was based solely on bimanual clinical examination.

Main Results:

  • The incidence of pelvic lymphocysts was 25.3% in the studied cohort.
  • A significant association was observed between poorly differentiated tumors and lymphocyst development (70.8% of cases).
  • All identified lymphocysts resolved spontaneously without significant complications.

Conclusions:

  • Pelvic lymphocysts are a notable finding after cervical cancer surgery, with a higher incidence than previously thought.
  • Poorly differentiated tumors may predict lymphocyst formation.
  • These collections typically resolve without intervention, simplifying clinical management.
