Background:

  • Odontogenic infections can lead to severe complications like necrotizing fasciitis, especially in patients with diabetes mellitus.
  • Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressing infection characterized by necrosis of the superficial fascia.

Observation:

  • A 52-year-old female patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus (fasting blood glucose 303 mg/dL) presented with necrotizing fasciitis in the left cervical-thoracic region.
  • The patient received standard treatment including antibiotics, cervicotomy, and abscess drainage.

Findings:

  • Adjunctive therapy with 10 sessions of photobiomodulation using a red wavelength laser was administered to address tissue loss.
  • Significant improvements were observed, including increased granulation tissue, absence of necrotic areas, wound edge contraction, and complete wound repair.

Implications:

  • Photobiomodulation demonstrates effectiveness in optimizing healing and modulating the inflammatory response in necrotizing fasciitis sequelae.
  • This case highlights the potential of photobiomodulation as a valuable therapeutic option for managing complex infections in diabetic patients.
