Summary

Routine podiatric surgery did not result in bacteremia (bacteria in the bloodstream) in this study. This indicates that properly performed foot surgery is unlikely to cause bloodstream infections.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence of bacteremia following routine podiatric surgery.
  • To assess the risk of bloodstream infection associated with foot surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Perioperative blood cultures were collected from 42 patients undergoing podiatric surgery.
  • Blood cultures were incubated under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
  • Incision swabs were collected during the surgical procedures.

Main Results:

  • No instances of bacteremia were detected in any of the subjects during the study period.
  • Swab cultures from incisions also did not indicate infection.

Conclusions:

  • Routine podiatric surgery, when performed with proper aseptic techniques, does not appear to pose a significant risk of bacteremia.
  • These findings suggest that podiatric surgery is a safe procedure regarding bloodstream infections.
