Summary

Idiopathic acute orbital myositis, a type of orbital pseudotumor, can cause eye pain and swelling. This case showed favorable outcomes with corticosteroid treatment for this rare inflammatory eye condition.

Background:

  • Idiopathic acute orbital myositis is a rare inflammatory condition and a subgroup of orbital pseudotumor.
  • Orbital pseudotumor encompasses a spectrum of non-specific orbital inflammatory diseases.

Observation:

  • A 35-year-old woman presented with left ocular pain, eyelid swelling, and conjunctival hyperemia.
  • Clinical examination revealed limitation of abduction in the left eye.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated enlargement of the left medial rectus muscle.
  • The muscle exhibited contrast enhancement, indicative of inflammation.

Implications:

  • The pathogenesis of idiopathic acute orbital myositis remains unclear.
  • Corticosteroid therapy led to a favorable clinical evolution in this case.
  • This case highlights the importance of considering orbital myositis in the differential diagnosis of acute orbital pain.
