Post-traumatic Stress Disorder01:27

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

270
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.
Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations
A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events,...

Cognitive Therapy01:25

Cognitive Therapy

628
Cognitive therapy, pioneered by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s, is a structured approach to addressing psychological distress by focusing on the influence of thoughts on emotions and behaviors. All cognitive therapies involve the basic assumption that human beings have control over their feelings, and that how individuals feel about something depends on how they think about it. Unlike psychoanalytic methods that delve into unconscious processes or humanistic approaches emphasizing...

Beck's Cognitive Therapy

197
Cognitive therapy is a psychological approach designed to address distortions in thinking, which can lead to negative emotions and unrealistic beliefs. These cognitive distortions often influence how individuals interpret and respond to situations, exacerbating emotional distress. Below are some prevalent cognitive distortions, their characteristics, and examples of how they manifest in thought processes.

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

247
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

The Influence of Cognition on Affect01:29

The Influence of Cognition on Affect

105
Cognition plays a pivotal role in shaping emotional experiences, as demonstrated by Schachter and Singer’s two-factor theory of emotion. According to this model, emotion arises from a combination of physiological arousal and cognitive interpretation. The body’s physiological response to stimuli is ambiguous and only gains emotional significance through cognitive labeling. For instance, an increased heart rate and adrenaline surge while standing near an attractive person may be...

Interpersonal Psychotherapy01:25

Interpersonal Psychotherapy

183
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. The therapy is rooted in the interpersonal theories of Adolph Meyer and Harry Stack Sullivan, as well as John Bowlby's attachment theory, and focuses on the interplay between interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being.

Summary

Higher intelligence quotient (IQ) may enhance early recovery from PTSD with Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), but not Written Exposure Therapy (WET). Educational achievement did not impact treatment outcomes for PTSD symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Patient intelligence is a potential factor influencing comprehension and benefit from trauma-focused treatments for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
  • Previous research has not explored the relationship between patient intelligence and outcomes in PTSD psychotherapies.
  • Educational achievement is often used as a proxy for intelligence, but direct measures like Full Scale Intelligence Quotient (FSIQ) offer a more precise assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if educational achievement and estimated Full Scale Intelligence Quotient (FSIQ) scores moderate treatment outcomes in adults with PTSD.
  • To compare the moderating effects of FSIQ on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) versus Written Exposure Therapy (WET) for PTSD.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 126 adults with PTSD, allocated equally to CPT or WET.
  • Measurement of PTSD symptom severity at baseline and at 6, 12, 24, 36, and 60 weeks post-treatment initiation.
  • Utilized multilevel models to analyze the moderating impact of FSIQ and educational achievement on symptom reduction.

Main Results:

  • Higher FSIQ scores were associated with significantly greater PTSD symptom reduction in CPT up to 24 weeks, but this effect was not observed in WET.
  • The positive association between higher FSIQ and symptom reduction in CPT did not persist at the 60-week follow-up.
  • Educational achievement did not significantly moderate PTSD symptom changes in either CPT or WET at 24 or 60 weeks.

Conclusions:

  • Individuals with higher FSIQ undergoing CPT may experience accelerated symptom improvement in the initial phase of PTSD treatment.
  • FSIQ does not appear to influence long-term PTSD symptom reduction in either CPT or WET.
  • Further research is needed to understand the nuances of cognitive factors in PTSD treatment efficacy.
