Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System IV: CMRI

199
Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging, or CMRI, is a non-invasive diagnostic test that employs a magnetic field and radiofrequency waves to create precise images of the heart and arteries. It provides comprehensive information about cardiac anatomy, function, perfusion, and tissue characterization without ionizing radiation.IndicationsCMRI diagnoses various heart conditions, including tissue damage from heart attacks, ischemic heart disease, myocarditis, aortic issues (tears, aneurysms,...

DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Summary

Optimized 3D T2-weighted fast field echo (FFE) provides stronger flow suppression for carotid imaging compared to 3D T2-SPACE. This technique maintains good image quality and serves as a viable alternative for carotid assessments.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Cardiovascular Imaging

Background:

  • T2-weighted fast field echo (FFE) offers black blood effects and high imaging efficiency, similar to sampling perfection with application-optimized contrast using different flip angle evolutions (SPACE).
  • Optimization of 3D T2-FFE sequences is crucial for enhancing carotid imaging quality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To optimize the 3D T2-FFE sequence for carotid wall imaging.
  • To compare the performance of optimized 3D T2-FFE with 3D T2-SPACE in carotid imaging.

Main Methods:

  • Optimized scanning parameters for 3D T2-FFE for carotid wall imaging.
  • Acquired cervical 3D T2-FFE and 3D T2-SPACE images in 20 healthy volunteers and 10 patients with carotid plaque.
  • Compared signal-to-noise ratios (SNRwall, SNRlumen), contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRwall_lumen), residual flow signals, and flow void grades between the two sequences.
  • Assessed inter- and intra-observer reproducibility for both sequences.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in SNRwall between 3D T2-FFE and 3D T2-SPACE.
  • 3D T2-FFE showed lower SNRlumen compared to 3D T2-SPACE.
  • No significant difference in CNRwall_lumen between the sequences.
  • 3D T2-FFE demonstrated significantly lower incidence of residual flow signal at the carotid bifurcation.
  • 3D T2-FFE exhibited better flow suppression in the cerebellopontine angle region compared to 3D T2-SPACE.
  • Both sequences showed excellent reproducibility.

Conclusions:

  • Optimized 3D T2-FFE offers superior flow suppression compared to 3D T2-SPACE for carotid imaging.
  • 3D T2-FFE maintains good imaging quality and can be a valuable alternative for carotid imaging.
  • The enhanced flow suppression by 3D T2-FFE aids in visualizing carotid structures more clearly.
