Area of Science:

  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Collaborative Systems
  • Virtual and Augmented Reality

Background:

  • Remote expert assistance in maintenance tasks offers significant time and cost savings.
  • Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies can improve remote guidance by overlaying 3D information and enabling shared virtual presence.
  • Traditional face-to-face collaboration relies on rich interpersonal cues (e.g., gaze, body language) often missing in remote scenarios.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To address the challenge of limited communication cues in remote mixed reality (MR) maintenance collaborations.
  • To explore novel interaction paradigms that compensate for the lack of essential communication signals.
  • To enhance collaborative abilities through shared viewpoints and improved awareness features.

Main Methods:

  • Focus on the navigation task within maintenance procedures.
  • Development of a novel interaction paradigm for demonstrating manipulation gestures.
  • Implementation in an early prototype for evaluation.

Main Results:

  • The study evaluates concepts for remote collaboration in MR environments.
  • Identified opportunities for augmenting collaborative abilities, such as sharing identical viewpoints.
  • Demonstrated a novel interaction paradigm for guiding manipulation tasks.

Conclusions:

  • Effective remote MR collaboration requires adapted interaction and awareness features.
  • Shared viewpoints and guided manipulation gestures are key to improving remote maintenance.
  • Guidelines are provided for developing future efficient remote collaboration systems in MR.
