Without Land, No Crops - Without Diversity, No Healthy and Sustainable Diets
Abstract:
The targets defined under sustainable development goal 2 not only focus on ending all forms of malnutrition - including hidden hunger - but assert that secure and equal access to land is crucial if food and nutrition security are to be assured. In addition, they highlight the need for sustainable food systems, including agricultural practices that help maintain ecosystems and progressively improve land and soil quality. The article sheds light on how growing pressure on land affects the food and nutrition security of small holders who are among those most affected by hunger and malnutrition. It also illustrates how shrinking diversity on the fields and in the markets lead to unbalanced diets. Finally, the article sets out what needs to be done in order to move forward toward achieving zero hunger and malnutrition while committing to making the right to adequate food for everyone a reality.
