Background:

  • Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), or presbycusis, is a significant sensory decline.
  • Understanding the genetic and physiological factors influencing ARHL is crucial for developing interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate age-related changes in auditory function in the dark agouti (DA) rat strain.
  • To determine the suitability of male DA rats for modeling ARHL.

Main Methods:

  • Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded in male and female DA rats aged 3 to 18 months.
  • Measurements included hearing thresholds, absolute latencies, and interpeak latencies (IPLs) at 8, 16, and 32 kHz.

Main Results:

  • Male DA rats showed increased hearing thresholds at 18 months, while female thresholds remained stable.
  • Both male and female DA rats exhibited age- and sex-related increases in absolute latencies.
