Treatment of perichondritis with a quinolone derivative--norfloxacin
1UAB/University Station, Department of Dermatology, Birmingham.
Abstract:
Auricular perichondritis is an uncommon complication following surgery of the external ear. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most commonly associated pathogen. Presented is a patient with auricular perichondritis successfully treated with norfloxacin, a newly available, orally administered antibiotic with antipseudomonal activity.
Insights
Auricular perichondritis, a rare external ear surgery complication, was successfully treated with norfloxacin. This oral antibiotic effectively targets Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the common pathogen involved in this infection.
Area of Science:
- Otolaryngology
- Infectious Diseases
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Auricular perichondritis is an infrequent complication post-external ear surgery.
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa is frequently identified as the causative pathogen.
Observation:
- A case of auricular perichondritis is presented.
- The condition followed a surgical procedure on the external ear.
Findings:
- Successful treatment of auricular perichondritis was achieved using norfloxacin.
- Norfloxacin is an orally administered antibiotic with demonstrated antipseudomonal activity.
Implications:
- Norfloxacin offers a viable oral treatment option for auricular perichondritis.
- This highlights the efficacy of newer antibiotics in managing specific post-operative infections.
