Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the genetic architecture of the mottled egg trait in chickens.
  • To identify genetic loci and candidate genes associated with mottled eggshells.

Main Methods:

  • Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were performed on an F2 resource population derived from crossing Dongxiang Blue-shelled and White Leghorn chickens.
  • High-density arrays were utilized to analyze 407 pink and 799 blue eggs.
  • Bivariate GWAS and gene annotation were employed to identify significant loci and candidate genes.

Main Results:

  • Mottled egg scores were higher in blue eggs compared to pink eggs.
  • Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) heritability for mottled eggs was estimated at 0.18 (laying day) and 0.20 (7-day storage).

  • Genomic selection is proposed as a viable and profitable strategy for breeding programs aiming to eliminate the mottled egg trait.
