Summary

Iris contact with posterior chamber intraocular lenses (IOLs) can cause significant fibrovascular membrane formation and cell proliferation. This experimental study in cats shows prolonged IOL contact is not tolerated by the iris.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To experimentally investigate the histopathological effects of iris-IOL contact in feline eyes.
  • To determine the tolerance of the iris to prolonged contact with intraocular lenses.

Main Methods:

  • Posterior chamber IOLs were implanted in cat eyes following cataract extraction (extracapsular or phacoemulsification).
  • Eyes were examined for varying degrees of iris-IOL contact.
  • Histopathological analysis was performed on ocular tissues.

  • Fifty-two percent of eyes with iris-IOL contact showed fibrovascular membrane formation.
