Regulation of Stroke Volume01:27

Regulation of Stroke Volume

4.4K
The regulation of stroke volume, which is the amount of blood the heart pumps out during each heartbeat, is critical for maintaining a healthy circulatory system. Stroke volume is influenced by three main factors: preload, contractility, and afterload.
Preload refers to the degree of stretch on the heart before it contracts. It's analogous to the stretching of a rubber band; the more it's stretched, the more forcefully it snaps back. This concept is encapsulated in the Frank-Starling law of the...

Cognitive Development During Adulthood01:30

Cognitive Development During Adulthood

508
Cognitive development continues throughout adulthood, undergoing significant shifts across early, middle, and late stages. Individual transition occurs from adolescent idealism to pragmatic and adaptable thinking in early adulthood. During this period, individuals learn to integrate personal beliefs with the recognition that other perspectives are equally valid. Exposure to the complexities of modern society, diverse experiences, and higher education contribute to this adaptive thought process,...

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Cognitive Science
  • Rehabilitation Medicine

Background:

  • Limited data exists on cognitive reserve and cognitive impairment in stroke patients.
  • Understanding predictors of cognitive reserve is crucial for stroke rehabilitation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify predictors of cognitive reserve in stroke patients.
  • To explore the relationship between cognitive reserve, cognitive function, and quality of life post-stroke.

Main Methods:

  • 80 stroke patients from Malaysian hospitals were assessed.
  • Instruments included the Malay Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire (CRIq-M), DASS-21, WHO-QOL BREF-21, MoCA, and mRS.

Main Results:

  • Cognitive reserve (CRIq-M) positively correlated with cognitive function (MoCA) (r = 0.529, p < .01).
  • Education predicted cognitive impairment.
  • Cognitive impairment (MoCA) predicted cognitive reserve.

Conclusions:

  • Early identification of cognitive impairment in stroke patients is vital.
  • Tailored rehabilitation programs can enhance cognitive reserve and quality of life.
  • Education and cognitive status are key factors influencing cognitive reserve in stroke survivors.
