Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the construct validity of the Assessment of Problem-Solving in Play.
  • To assess the responsiveness of the Assessment of Problem-Solving in Play.
  • To establish a reliable tool for measuring problem-solving in children with motor delays.

Main Methods:

  • 125 children aged 7-27 months with motor delays participated.
  • Children were assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition Cognitive Scale and the Assessment of Problem-Solving in Play.
  • Assessments were conducted up to four times over 12 months, comparing baseline and change scores.

Main Results:

  • Strong positive correlation found between the Assessment of Problem-Solving in Play and the Bayley Cognitive Scale at baseline (r=.83, p<.001).
  • Significant correlation observed for changes in scores over time (r=.64, p<.001).
  • Children with severe motor delays had lower baseline scores and showed less improvement compared to other groups.

Conclusions:

  • The Assessment of Problem-Solving in Play demonstrates strong construct validity.
  • The tool is responsive to changes in problem-solving skills over time in young children with motor delays.
  • Findings support the use of the Assessment of Problem-Solving in Play for quantifying problem-solving abilities in this population.
