The crystal structure of the natural product lawinal was determined at 150 K. This study confirms its S-configuration and reveals unique hydrogen-bonding and pi-pi interactions in its solid state.
Area of Science:
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Crystallography
- Organic Chemistry
Background:
- Lawinal is a natural product with a complex chromane structure.
- Understanding the solid-state structure of natural products is crucial for their synthesis and application.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the crystal structure of lawinal at low temperature (150 K).
- To confirm the absolute configuration of lawinal.
- To investigate intermolecular interactions in the crystal lattice.
Main Methods:
- Single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 150 K.
- Analysis of crystallographic data to determine molecular geometry and symmetry.
- Comparison with previous stereochemical assignments.
Main Results:
- Lawinal crystallizes in the monoclinic system (I2) with Z'=2.
- The S-configuration at the C-2 position was confirmed.
- Alternating hydrogen-bonded chains and pi-pi interactions between phenyl substituents were observed.
Conclusions:
- The crystal structure of lawinal provides detailed insights into its solid-state organization.
- The findings support previous stereochemical assignments and highlight the role of non-covalent interactions in stabilizing the crystal structure.

Most monatomic ions behave as charged spheres, and their attraction for ions of opposite charge is the same in every direction. Consequently, stable structures for ionic compounds result (1) when ions of one charge are surrounded by as many ions as possible of the opposite...

Crystal Field Theory - Octahedral Complexes
To explain the observed behavior of transition metal complexes (such as colors), a model involving electrostatic interactions between the electrons from the ligands and the electrons in the unhybridized d orbitals of the central metal atom has been developed. This electrostatic model is crystal field theory (CFT). It helps to understand, interpret, and predict the colors, magnetic behavior, and some structures of coordination compounds of transition metals.
CFT focuses on...
