Equilibrium and Balance01:15

Equilibrium and Balance

5.7K
The inner ear assumes dual functionalities of auditory perception and equilibrium maintenance. The vestibule is the organ responsible for balance. This organ contains mechanoreceptors, specifically hair cells, endowed with stereocilia, which aid in deciphering information regarding the position and motion of our heads. Two intrinsic components, the utricle and saccule, help perceive head position, while the semicircular canals track head movement. Neurological messages initiated in the...

The Vestibular System01:29

The Vestibular System

42.5K
The vestibular system is a set of inner ear structures that provide a sense of balance and spatial orientation. This system is comprised of structures within the labyrinth of the inner ear, including the cochlea and two otolith organs—the utricle and saccule. The labyrinth also contains three semicircular canals—superior, posterior, and horizontal—that are oriented on different planes.

Glaucoma: Overview

1.1K
Glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure that damages the retina and optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness if left untreated. The human eye has various components, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, and optic nerve. Aqueous humor is secreted by the epithelium of the ciliary body in the posterior chamber and flows through the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm, maintaining normal intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork and the canal...

Summary

Patients with dizziness and headaches show sensory reweighting, indicating vestibular involvement. This supports a link between vestibular migraine and sensory processing challenges.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Vestibular Science

Background:

  • Dizziness affects 20-30% of the general population.
  • A subset of dizzy patients experience vertigo, suggesting a vestibular component in chronic migraine.
  • Vestibular migraine is often a diagnosis of exclusion based on patient history.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the link between headaches and dizziness.
  • To determine if individuals with dizziness and headaches exhibit instability in dynamic visual environments.
  • To explore the inability to process conflicting visual and vestibular signals in these patients.

Main Methods:

  • 74 patients with dizziness complaints were evaluated.
  • Visual-Vestibular Mismatch (VVM) effects were measured using a modified VVM questionnaire.
  • Visual dependence was assessed using the Rod and Frame test to measure error in subjective visual vertical.

Main Results:

  • 56.8% of participants tested positive for Visual-Vestibular Mismatch (VVM).
  • 68.9% of those with VVM also reported headaches.
  • Visual dependence was present in 41.5% of patients, with no significant correlation to headaches.

Conclusions:

  • Sensory reweighting occurs in patients with dizziness and headache.
  • Findings support the role of vestibular system involvement in this patient group.
  • Results suggest potential for novel interventions targeting sensory processing.
