Disorders of the Male Reproductive System01:20

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

3.7K
Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

Male Sexual Response: Erection & Ejaculation

10.4K
Sexual stimulation can take various forms, such as physical touch and visual or auditory cues. When this happens, the parasympathetic reflex in the sacral portion of the spinal cord is activated. This reflex stimulates the release of nitric oxide (NO), which then dilates the arterioles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the erectile tissues - the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.
The blood filling the erectile tissues compresses the veins, which helps to prevent blood from leaving...

Summary

Prostate biopsy can temporarily impact erectile function, with significant reductions in the International Index of Erectile Function-5 score observed one month post-procedure. This effect is transient, resolving by three to six months, necessitating patient counseling on temporary erectile dysfunction post-biopsy.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Men's Health
  • Sexual Medicine

Background:

  • Prostate biopsy is a common procedure for diagnosing prostate cancer.
  • Erectile function is a critical aspect of men's health and quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and meta-analyze the impact of prostate biopsy on erectile function.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published up to August 2020.
  • Pooled mean difference of International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF5) scores at 1, 3, and 6 months post-biopsy.
  • Utilized a random-effects model for data analysis.

Main Results:

  • Seven studies were included in the meta-analysis.
  • A significant mean reduction in IIEF5 scores of 4.61 was observed at 1 month post-biopsy (P = .04).
  • Erectile function showed non-significant differences at 3 and 6 months post-procedure, indicating transient effects.

Conclusions:

  • Prostate biopsy is associated with a temporary decline in erectile function.
  • Patients should be informed about the transient nature of erectile dysfunction following prostate biopsy.
  • Further research may explore factors influencing recovery of erectile function.
