Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the existing literature on shared decision-making (SDM) within the field of dermatology.

  • A comprehensive scoping review was conducted, searching multiple databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Scopus, etc.).
  • 1673 titles/abstracts were screened, with 29 full-text articles meeting inclusion criteria for qualitative data extraction.
  • Data were coded to identify advantages, disadvantages, implementation strategies, and patient/physician perspectives on SDM in dermatology.

Main Results:

  • Despite a limited number of studies (n=29), a consistent message emerged regarding the importance of SDM in dermatology.
  • Medical dermatology, particularly melanoma and psoriasis, was the most studied area. Few validated SDM tools specific to dermatology exist.
  • Barriers like time constraints and lack of training were identified, alongside proposed solutions and emphasis on the value of SDM for both patients and clinicians.

Conclusions:

  • The literature strongly supports SDM as a valuable tool for patient-centered dermatologic care.
  • While established SDM tools exist, more research is needed for broader implementation, especially in subspecialties.
  • The reviewed literature offers practical strategies and tools for initiating SDM practices in dermatology.
