Summary

Primary duodenal carcinoma is rare and often presents with vague symptoms. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention, such as the modified Whipple procedure, improve patient outcomes for this uncommon gastrointestinal tumor.

  • Seven patients had resectable disease at laparotomy.
  • A modified Whipple procedure was preferred for tumors in the second part of the duodenum; segmental resection for others.
  • Five patients with no lymph node involvement showed good long-term survival.
  • Two patients with lymph node involvement also remained well at 30 months postoperatively.

Conclusions:

  • Increased awareness of duodenal tumors is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.
  • Aggressive diagnostic and surgical approaches are necessary to improve cure rates for duodenal carcinoma.
  • Prognosis is poor once the carcinoma has metastasized.
