Motor Units

60.8K
A motor unit consists of two main components: a single efferent motor neuron (i.e., a neuron that carries impulses away from the central nervous system) and all of the muscle fibers it innervates. The motor neuron may innervate multiple muscle fibers, which are single cells, but only one motor neuron innervates a single muscle fiber.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Psychology
    • Caregiver Support

    Background:

    • Mutuality, a positive caregiver-patient relationship, impacts health and well-being.
    • Mutuality has not been previously studied in motor neuron disease (MND).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the concept of mutuality in motor neuron disease.
    • To determine the content validity of mutuality and its dimensions in MND patients and caregivers.

    Main Methods:

    • A mixed-method study using the Mutuality Scale and in-depth interviews.
    • Involved 30 people with MND and 24 family caregivers.
    • Employed deductive, qualitative content analysis.

    Main Results:

    • Mutuality and its four dimensions were confirmed in motor neuron disease.
    • Patients (M=3.07) and caregivers (M=3.16) reported mutuality.
    • Love and shared values scored highest; shared activities scored lowest.

    Conclusions:

    • The concept of mutuality is valid in motor neuron disease.
    • Nurses should assess and foster mutuality in MND care.
    • Strategies to increase and preserve mutuality are recommended.
