Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate age-dependent differences in neural connectivity during semantic processing in youths with ASD compared to typically developing (TD) youths.
  • To explore functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) based psychophysiological interaction (PPI) differences between ASD and TD groups across childhood and adolescence.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited four groups: ASD children (n=31), TD children (n=33), ASD adolescents (n=30), and TD adolescents (n=34).
  • Utilized fMRI with PPI during semantic judgment tasks to assess neural connectivity.
  • Analyzed differences in brain activation and functional connectivity between groups.

Main Results:

  • Children with ASD showed greater left cuneus activation and weaker connectivity between the left cuneus and left middle temporal gyrus (MTG) compared to TD children.
  • Adolescents with ASD exhibited less left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) activation and weaker functional connectivity between the left IFG and left MTG compared to TD adolescents.

Conclusions:

  • Children with ASD may rely more on visual occipital processes disconnected from temporal semantic areas.
  • Adolescents with ASD may show less effective top-down control of semantic knowledge due to reduced frontal engagement.
  • Findings indicate developmental shifts in the neural underpinnings of semantic processing alterations in ASD.
