Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics and Sports Medicine
  • Digital Health and Rehabilitation

Background:

  • Limited long-term data exists for app-based postoperative rehabilitation programs.
  • Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) recovery often involves structured physical therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of an app-based rehabilitation program (GenuSport) versus standard care after TKA.
  • To compare functional outcomes and pain levels between app-guided and traditional physiotherapy groups.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective randomized controlled trial with 2-year follow-up was conducted.
  • 35 TKA patients were randomized into an app-based exercise group (n=20) or a control group (n=15) receiving regular physiotherapy.
  • Functional outcomes were assessed using the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), Knee Society Score (KSS), and VAS pain scale.

Main Results:

  • The app group demonstrated significantly better short-term results in 10-m walk time and VAS pain scores at rest and during activity.
  • Long-term follow-up showed a trend towards higher KSS Function scores in the app group (76.32 vs. 67.67).
  • Patients using the app reported reduced painkiller consumption and higher participation in sports post-surgery.

Conclusions:

  • App-based knee training is a potentially effective tool for enhancing functional recovery after TKA.
  • The GenuSport app shows promise in improving KSS function scores and reducing pain post-total knee arthroplasty.
