Area of Science:

  • Dental Imaging
  • Radiology
  • Image Processing

Background:

  • Cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) systems often incorporate artifact reduction (AR) software.
  • Beam hardening (BH) artifacts can degrade image quality in CBCT scans.
  • Evaluating the efficacy of AR software in reducing BH artifacts is crucial for diagnostic accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify beam hardening (BH) artifacts in dental teeth.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of artifact reduction (AR) software in two different CBCT systems.

Main Methods:

  • Six prepared and root-filled teeth were imaged using Planmeca ProMax3D and Vatech Pax-i3D CBCT systems, with and without AR software.
  • Image analysis using FSL software quantified light and dark BH artifact components.
  • Statistical analysis, including paired t tests and cluster mass correction, compared artifact presence with and without AR.

Main Results:

  • The Planmeca system demonstrated a significant reduction in light BH artifacts (P < .05) and overall artifact volumes.
  • No significant reduction in light or dark BH artifacts was observed with the Vatech system.
  • AR effectiveness varied between the two CBCT systems evaluated.

Conclusions:

  • Proprietary artifact reduction (AR) software does not offer uniform effectiveness in mitigating cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) beam hardening (BH) artifacts.
  • The performance of AR software in reducing artifact components differs between CBCT systems.
  • Further research may be needed to optimize AR algorithms for diverse CBCT hardware.
