Early aggressive treatment for posttraumatic pulmonary insufficiency using positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and cardiovascular support successfully reversed respiratory failure in 39 patients. This approach proved effective regardless of trauma type, preventing deaths from respiratory complications.
