Menopause01:28

Menopause

3.4K
Menopause, a natural biological process marking the end of a woman's fertility, typically occurs between the fifth and sixth decade of life. This phase is characterized by the exhaustion of the ovarian follicle pool, leading to less responsive ovaries despite the high levels of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). The consequential decrease in estrogen production results in symptoms like hot flashes, heavy sweating, headaches, hair loss, muscle pains, vaginal...

Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle01:22

Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle

1.1K
The ovarian cycle regulates endometrial changes throughout a single menstrual cycle via the coordinated action of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and gonadotrophins.
At puberty, GnRH begins a pulsatile release pattern, which triggers the anterior pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses vary across the menstrual cycle, with faster pulses favoring LH release and slower pulses favoring FSH...

Socioemotional Experience and Gender Development01:30

Socioemotional Experience and Gender Development

151
Social-emotional experiences and cultural influences play significant roles in shaping gender development. During middle childhood, from ages 6 to 11, peer groups become dominant in reinforcing gender norms. Children in this age group often align with same-gender peer groups, which actively encourage behaviors that conform to traditional gender roles. For instance, boys may be discouraged from engaging in activities perceived as feminine, reinforcing culturally dictated norms about masculinity...

The Menstrual Cycle01:19

The Menstrual Cycle

2.0K
The menstrual cycle is a recurrent sequence of changes in the uterine endometrium, specifically its functional layer, the stratum functionalis. This cycle prepares the uterus for potential pregnancy. This cycle typically spans 21–35 days, averaging 28 days, and aligns with the ovarian cycle, regulated by fluctuating levels of ovarian hormones, primarily estrogen and progesterone.
The menstrual phase occurs from days 1 to 5 and involves the shedding of the stratum functionalis, as a...

Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern

279
Assessing the gastrointestinal (GI) system is a complex process that begins with collecting subjective data. This data, collected through patient interviews, provides crucial insights into the patient's health history, perception patterns, and lifestyle habits, all contributing significantly to GI health.
Health Perception Patterns
Health perception patterns offer valuable insights into a patient's lifestyle habits and how they may impact their GI health. These patterns include:

Hormonal Regulation01:40

Hormonal Regulation

46.2K
Hormones regulate a significant portion of digestion through activation of the neuroendocrine system. The neuroendocrine system of digestion contains many different hormones all with multiple functions that are both, directly and indirectly, involved in digestion.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Women's Health
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Menopause is a significant life transition with varying cognitive appraisals.
  • Previous qualitative research informed the development of a new assessment tool.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a Portuguese version of the Menopause Representations Questionnaire (MenoSentations-Q).
  • To assess cognitive appraisal of menopause using the Self-Regulation Model framework.

Main Methods:

  • A total of 309 Portuguese women (aged 45-65) completed the MenoSentations-Q.
  • Psychometric properties including factorial, convergent, discriminant, and criterion validity, alongside reliability and sensitivity, were evaluated.

Main Results:

  • The MenoSentations-Q demonstrated acceptable factorial, convergent, and discriminant validity.
  • Good sensitivity and reliability were found for the four factors: identity, positive consequences, negative consequences, and control/awareness/cause.
  • Criterion validity was confirmed for two factors.

Conclusions:

  • The MenoSentations-Q is a brief, validated measure for assessing menopausal representations in Portuguese women.
  • This instrument can inform interventions aimed at challenging unhelpful menopause beliefs in clinical and community settings.
