Summary

Anthracosis rarely affects lymph nodes, but this case highlights anthracofibrosis in a nonsmoker

Background:

  • Anthracosis, a condition caused by particulate matter inhalation, typically affects the bronchial tree.
  • Lymph node involvement in anthracosis is uncommon, making such cases diagnostically challenging.
  • Biomass exposure and air pollution are known risk factors for anthracosis.

Observation:

  • A 44-year-old female presented with a painless supraclavicular swelling.
  • Fine-needle aspiration cytology revealed cells with abundant black pigment, admixed with histiocytes, fibroblasts, and lymphocytes.
  • Immunohistochemistry and special stains confirmed the pigment's nature and cell type.

Findings:

  • The final diagnosis was anthracofibrosis of the lymph node.
  • The pigmented cells were identified as histiocytes laden with carbon particles.
