Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

569
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Psychosurgery

225
Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry and Psychology
  • Epidemiology
  • Research Methodology

Background:

  • Case-control psychological autopsy studies are crucial for understanding suicide risk factors.
  • A standardized method for assessing the quality of these studies is needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a reliable checklist for evaluating the methodological quality of case-control psychological autopsy studies.

Main Methods:

  • A 16-item checklist was created by adapting existing items and developing new ones.
  • Inter-rater reliability was assessed using percent agreement and kappa on 26 international studies.
  • Internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha.

Main Results:

  • The overall checklist demonstrated high inter-rater reliability (86.5% agreement, κ=0.71).
  • Individual checklist items showed acceptable to high agreement among raters.
  • Internal consistency was low (α=0.56), potentially limiting its use as a single quality score.

Conclusions:

  • The novel checklist reliably assesses methodological quality in psychological autopsy studies.
  • It offers guidance for planning future quantitative suicide research.
  • The low internal consistency suggests caution when using it as a comprehensive quality measure.
