Summary

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Linguistics

Background:

  • Phenomenological research suggests schizophrenia spectrum disorders are fundamentally disorders of the basic self.
  • Basic self-disturbance is a key concept in understanding the subjective experience of psychosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between basic self-disturbance and schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
  • To compare self-report and lexical measures of basic self-disturbance in high-schizotypy and low-schizotypy groups.

Main Methods:

  • Compared 39 individuals with high schizotypy to 41 with low schizotypy using the Schizophrenia Proneness Questionnaire (SPQ).
  • Collected narrative data and administered the Ego Strength Questionnaire and a self-report measure of the Schizophrenia Proneness Instrument.
  • Analyzed pronoun usage in narratives as a lexical measure of self-disturbance.

Main Results:

  • The high-schizotypy group reported more basic symptoms and lower ego strength.
  • Individuals with high schizotypy used third-person and personal pronouns more frequently.
  • Self-report and lexical measures correlated and were effective in classifying schizotypy.

Conclusions:

  • Findings support the phenomenological argument linking high schizotypy with basic self-disturbance.
  • Both self-report and linguistic analysis are valuable tools for assessing self-disturbance in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
