Cranial Bones: Lateral View

3.9K
The lateral view of the cranium is dominated by temporal, sphenoid, and ethmoid bones.
The temporal bone forms the lower lateral side of the skull. The temporal bone is subdivided into several regions. The flattened upper portion is the squamous portion of the temporal bone. Below this area and projecting anteriorly is the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, which forms the posterior portion of the zygomatic arch. Posteriorly is the mastoid portion of the temporal bone. Projecting...

Summary

Maxillary sinus volume is larger in skeletal Class II than Class III individuals and in males compared to females. These findings offer insights for orthodontic and surgical dental procedures.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Radiology
  • Anatomy

Background:

  • Maxillary sinus volume (MSV) variations across craniofacial patterns are not well-documented.
  • Understanding MSV is crucial for various dental and surgical interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate and compare maxillary sinus volume (MSV) in different craniofacial patterns using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 100 pre-orthodontic patients.
  • 3D reconstruction and volume calculation of the maxillary sinus from CBCT images using MIMICS 14.1 software.
  • Patients were categorized into different anteroposterior and vertical skeletal groups.

Main Results:

  • The mean maxillary sinus volume was 20,279.50 ± 7800.33 mm³.
  • Skeletal Class II individuals exhibited significantly larger MSV than Skeletal Class III individuals (P < 0.05).
  • Males had significantly larger MSV than females (P < 0.05), and a positive correlation was found between ANB and MSV (P < 0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Maxillary sinus volume is significantly greater in skeletal Class II compared to skeletal Class III individuals and in males versus females.
  • These findings have implications for orthodontic, endodontic, and oral surgery practices.
