Reintegration professionals value client relationships but rarely use shared decision-making (SDM) in return-to-work (RTW) processes. Enhanced training is needed for both professionals and clients to implement SDM effectively.

  • Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fourteen reintegration professionals across four municipalities.
  • Interview transcripts were analyzed using content analysis with open and axial coding.

Main Results:

  • Professionals prioritized strong client relationships, trust, and teamwork.
  • Clients were not informed about their role in decision-making or involved in goal setting.
  • While professionals considered client preferences and offered some choices, they did not fully explore options, discuss pros/cons, or evaluate decisions.

Conclusions:

  • SDM holds potential due to professionals' emphasis on client alliances and tailored approaches.
  • Current SDM implementation by professionals is limited, requiring further training for professionals and municipalities.
  • Empowering clients with knowledge and skills is crucial for facilitating self-management and SDM in RTW.
