Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Jejunal diverticulosis is a rare condition, often asymptomatic and discovered incidentally.
  • Complications of jejunal diverticulosis carry significant mortality risks, necessitating its consideration in acute abdominal pain differential diagnoses.

Observation:

  • A 78-year-old male presented with acute lower abdominal pain.
  • Computed tomography revealed an inflammatory abscess associated with a perforated jejunal diverticulum.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent successful small bowel resection with primary anastomosis.
  • This surgical approach resulted in an excellent clinical outcome.

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis of jejunal diverticulosis through cross-sectional imaging is crucial for timely management.
  • Surgical intervention, including small bowel resection and anastomosis, is an effective treatment for complicated jejunal diverticulosis.
