Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Odontology
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Globus symptoms, characterized by a sensation of a lump in the throat, affect numerous patients.
  • The etiology of globus symptoms is often unclear, leading to diagnostic challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of occlusal adjustment in treating globus symptoms.
  • To explore the potential link between dental factors and globus sensation.

Main Methods:

  • A double-blind study involving 22 patients with typical globus symptoms.
  • Patients underwent otolaryngological and odontological evaluations, including hematological, endoscopic, and radiological examinations.
  • Random assignment to either occlusal adjustment or a mock adjustment (placebo) group.

Main Results:

  • A significant association was observed between successful occlusal adjustment and the disappearance of globus symptoms.
  • The positive effects of the treatment were assessed 2 to 3 months post-intervention.

Conclusions:

  • Occlusal adjustment is an effective treatment for globus symptoms.
  • The findings support the proposal of a new disease name: globus syndrome.
