Insights

This study identified Mannheimia haemolytica serotypes and virulence genes in ovine and caprine pneumonia cases in Iran. Serotypes A2 and A6 were most common, with key virulence genes found in all isolates.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Microbiology
  • Animal Pathology

Background:

  • Mannheimia haemolytica is a significant cause of pneumonia in sheep and goats.
  • Understanding serotype distribution and virulence factors is crucial for disease control.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize ovine and caprine Mannheimia haemolytica isolates from Iran.
  • To determine the prevalence of major serotypes (A1, A2, A6) and virulence-associated genes.

Main Methods:

  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to identify serotypes and virulence genes.
  • Isolates were obtained from pneumonic ovine and caprine lungs collected between 2018 and 2020.

Main Results:

  • Serotypes A2 (42.3%) and A6 (40.9%) were most prevalent in 71 M. haemolytica isolates.
  • Virulence genes lkt, pomA, and nanH were universally detected; sodC was specific to A2 isolates.

Conclusions:

  • Serotypes A2 and A6 are dominant in ovine and caprine pneumonia in Iran.
  • The presence of specific virulence genes provides insights into M. haemolytica pathogenicity and epidemiology.
