Background:

Acclimatizing dynamic, student-driven instruction is crucial for enhancing online learning environments.
Understanding the interplay between student characteristics and online engagement is essential.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the relationship between student personality traits (introversion/extraversion), social presence, and sense of class community in online writing courses.
To investigate these relationships within the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in Saudi Arabia.

Main Methods:

Quantitative research design involving a sample of 171 EFL students (36 males, 135 females) at a public university in Saudi Arabia.
Assessing student characteristics (introversion/extraversion), social presence, and sense of class community in an online writing environment.

Main Results:

A significant positive relationship was found between both extraverted and introverted students and their social presence.
Both introverted and extraverted students demonstrated a positive relationship with their sense of class community.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) positively influenced these relationships.

Conclusions:

Student personality traits are linked to their engagement and sense of community in online writing courses.
Instructors play a vital role in creating inclusive online learning experiences that cater to diverse student needs.
There is a need for pedagogically sound, student-centered online learning approaches that incorporate facilitation, feedback, and guidance, addressing individual differences.
