Summary

Pars plana vitrectomy prevented macular hole formation in 80% of patients. While most maintained or improved vision, some experienced decline due to cataracts, not hole progression.

  • To evaluate the efficacy of pars plana vitrectomy in eyes with impending macular holes.

Main Methods:

  • Pars plana vitrectomy was performed on 15 patients with signs of impending macular hole formation.
  • Follow-up averaged 26 months (minimum 15 months).

Main Results:

  • 80% (12/15) of eyes did not progress to macular holes.
  • Vision improved in 5 eyes, remained stable in 4, and worsened in 3.
  • Worsened vision was attributed to nuclear sclerosis (cataracts).
