Summary

Children with asthma and pet allergies have lower levels of specific nasal bacteria, Corynebacterium sp and Staphylococcus epidermidis. These bacteria are linked to reduced expression of inflammatory genes, potentially preventing pet sensitization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To jointly analyze the nasal microbiome and transcriptome in children with asthma.

  • Collected nasal samples from 132 children with asthma for 16S rRNA and RNA sequencing.
  • Measured specific IgE levels for cat and dog dander.
  • Analyzed nasal microbiome, transcriptome, and their correlations with pet sensitization status.

Main Results:

  • Cat sensitization was linked to lower nasal microbial diversity and altered bacterial composition.
  • Corynebacterium sp and Staphylococcus epidermidis were less abundant in pet-sensitized children.
  • Lower expression of inflammatory genes involved in allergen sensitization correlated with reduced abundance of these bacteria.

Conclusions:

  • Higher abundance of nasal Corynebacterium sp and S epidermidis is associated with the absence of pet sensitization.
  • These bacteria correlate with lower expression of inflammatory genes.
  • Nasal gene expression mediates the association between these nasal species and pet sensitization.
