Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of simultaneously administering cognitive (Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task - PASAT) and physical (cold pressor test - CP) stressors.
  • To examine potential interference or synergistic effects on physiological and subjective stress responses.

Main Methods:

  • 56 participants underwent either CP or a warm-water control condition.
  • Half of the sample performed the PASAT concurrently with the CP or control condition.
  • Salivary cortisol, cardiovascular parameters, subjective ratings, and voice pitch (F0) were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Cold exposure (CP) primarily influenced cortisol responses, pain perception, and subjective arousal, and increased voice pitch (F0).
  • The PASAT amplified cardiovascular reactions but did not alter pain ratings or cortisol responses to the CP.
  • PASAT administration during CP enhanced intra-individual concordance between elevated blood pressure and other reactivity measures.

Conclusions:

  • Simultaneous administration of cognitive and painful physical stressors does not lead to strong interference.
  • Specific additive effects are observed, particularly in cardiovascular reactivity.
  • Cognitive task performance decrements did not correlate with diminished stress responses.
